How I feel about this character I love her almost as much as I love Paige. I loved her right from the pilot and with every season she has grown so much and with that so has my love for her!!!
All the people I ship romantically with this character Mainly Paige but somewhat also Spencer and Hanna. I also shipped Emaya in season 1 and 2.
My non-romantic OTP for this character Spencer, Hanna, Aria, Toby (I wish they still had scenes just the 2 of them, I really loved their friendship in season 1).
My unpopular opinion about this character Ok first I’m going to start with an opinion that I don’t think is unpopular because it ties into my unpopular opinion. I really love that Emily always tries to see the best in people and is more forgiving then the others and gives second chances. I know some people think this makes her weak and vulnerable but I think it is part of what makes her great. Without her ability to see through people’s actions/words, Spoby and Paily wouldn’t exist. She saw who Toby was and gave him a chance way before the others did. She helped Spencer see that he was a good guy. and of course with Paige, even with the horrible things she did to her to suppress the gay, she realized there might be more to her actions. When Paige came to her doorstep to apologize instead of yelling or saying she hated her or whatever she took the time to listen, reassure Paige that she didn’t hate her because she saw that Paige was not in a good place AND forgave her. Honestly, I think her forgiving quality is so very rare and it makes her amazing.
Now for the more unpopular part….sometimes she carries this too far. She blindly forgives people and it allows people to use it against her. Yes, I am mainly talking about Alison but others could exploit this for sure (Nate sort of benefited from this too although it wasn’t quite the same). I’m not saying that she shouldn’t have given Alison a chance and stood up for her…but she was doing this to the detriment of others (Hanna, Spencer, Aria, Paige). So while I like Emily’s ability to forgive, I dislike it when it becomes detrimental to others (this may not be a super unpopular opinion but I can guess what fanbase would think this). By blindly believing in Alison, it caused: Emily to blow up at Hanna while she was in a downward spiral instead of trying to help, Spencer and Emily fought over this a few times, Aria was freaking out over what this means for her killing Shana and Emily mostly ignored this, Paige got broken up with and had to face the person who made her almost kill herself….
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. Hmmm to be honest I mostly love what the writers have done with Emily’s character. Where she started in season 1 to where she is now. She is standing up for herself and I love her growth so there isn’t much I would change. I guess, mostly just that she never wrecked her shoulder. And then swam her little face off and got a scholarship to Stanford so her and Paige could go live in that room on the computer.
